First attested as Cl. Medhuysen in 1491. nl fy Lyts Midhuzen, derived from fy lyts small, little and a compound of nl ofs mid mid-, middle and the plural form of ofs hūs house. The element nl klein was added to distinguish the settlement from nl Groot Medhuizen.
