Etymology
From de gmh īsvogel, from de goh īsfogal; compare nl ijsvogel, is ísfugl. de Eis Vogel. The former stem, however, is considered to be a variant of de Eisen (de goh īsarn), most likely referring to the green-blue upperparts with pale azure-blue back and rump of the adult bird. But compare parallel cs ledňáček, ru леди́нник akin to ru лёд. Also compare parallel pl zimorodek, ru зиморо́док, analyzable as akin to ru зима́.
