reconstruction
English
+ era of the United States
Etymology
A proper-noun variant of en reconstruction.
Proper noun
~
A period of the history of the United States from 1865 to 1877, during which the nation tried to resolve the status of the ex-Confederate states, the ex-Confederate leaders, and the Freedmen (ex-slaves) after the American Civil War.

Usage notes
Formerly, when contextually referred to directly as a time period, the definite article was more commonly used; as opposed to when the linguistic context is ‘the process of rebuilding’, in which it was more common to use no article. However, these rules were not very rigidly followed, and article usage varied significantly by speaker. Nowadays, it is most common to use no article, regardless of context.
