Usage notes
In its primary, literal sense, Suban-on is a proper noun identifying a proud, peaceful, and historically rich indigenous people who have lived along the rivers of western Mindanao for centuries.
However, in colloquial Cebuano, the term has been weaponized as a derogatory classist and ethno-centric slur. Similar to the word tagabukid (literally, "from the mountains"), it is used by urbanized lowlanders to demean someone's intelligence, lack of sophistication, or social awkwardness.
When used as an insult, it relies on the deeply harmful, colonial-era stereotype that indigenous mountain-dwelling peoples are inherently primitive, uneducated, and easily bewildered by modern technology or urban environments. Use of the word in this derogatory manner is highly offensive and widely condemned as discriminatory.
Synonyms
ceb tagabukid derogatory; hillbilly; country bumpkin; literally, "mountain dweller"
ceb probinsyano sometimes derogatory; provincial; unrefined urban outsider
ceb ignorante plain/literal; ignorant; uneducated
