German
Etymology
From de gmh drāt wire, thread, from de goh drāt, goh thrāt, from de gmw-pro *þrādu, from de gem-pro *þrēduz, from de ine-pro *treh₁-tu-, from ine-pro *terh₁- rub, twist. Related to de drehen to turn, twist, with which it was still associated in early modern German, as is proved by the insertion of the lengthening -h- (which is only used before sonorants or stem-finally). Cognate with nl draad, nds Draat, en thread, da -, no -, and sv - tråd, is þráður.
