Etymology
From de gmh kriusel, derived from gmh krūs, whence modern de kraus frizzy, curly. de Kräusel frizzle, squiggle. The sense “spinning top” was borrowed from cognate de gml krü̂sel into East Central German, whence it spread in the written language. The unrounded form de Kreisel was later standardised due to association with etymologically unrelated de Kreis circle. It may now be reanalysed as de Kreis -el.
