Kankanaey
Etymology
kne hunters from Awa, Buguias pursued and harassed a deer in the thick forest of the area. The deer fell into a deep ravine, then the hunters feasted on the deer meat while leaving their fire burning through the night. The following morning, the hunters were surprised that the rocks used to elevate the fire were malleable. Samples where brought home of these rocks, and fashioned tools and artifacts were made out of it and bartered with the lowlanders. Rich Spanish lowlander businessmen took notice and asked the natives where they got their copper. The native traders replied "kne nankayang up to the eastern mountains".
