Latin
Etymology
Possibly of la cel - origin, from la cel-pro *berg fortification, protection, from la ine-pro *bʰérǵʰos hill, similar to sla-pro *bergъ.Mommsen, Theodor. Corpus inscriptionum Latinarum. p. 548.
Tiraboschi argues that it is from the same root but via la gem -, from la gem-pro *bergaz + frk *haim home, meaning "mountain home," but the establishment of the city appears to precede the settlement of Germanic populations in the area.https://web.archive.org/web/20140503020058/http://www.comune.bergamo.it/servizi/Menu/dinamica.aspx?idSezione=3786&idArea=1181&idCat=1190&ID=1471&TipoElemento=pagina
