Etymology
enm ang -egian, ang -gian, from enm gmw-pro *-agōn, gmw-pro *-īgōn; equivalent to enm -y -en adjectival suffix adjectives infinitival suffix infinitival 1.
The environment where fortition of earlier /ɣ/ to /ɡ/ sometimes seen in this suffix is difficult to specify. Following Eilert Ekwall Ekwall, Jordan and Karl Luick Luick posit that it occurred before the secondarily-stressed verbal endings;1909 Ekwall Eilert Eilert Ekwall Zur geschichte der altenglischen gutturalen spirans ȝ im Mittelenglischen Englische Studien 40 O. R. Reisland w:Leipzig 44721422 161-174 https://archive.org/details/englische-studien_1909_40/page/161186 173II 709 945 Simonne d'Ardenne d'Ardenne fr rejects this as not explaining the parallel fortition in enm witege, variant of enm witie prophet, she instead suggests it originally occurred in forms where /ɣ/ was directly followed by the coronal stops /d/ /t/, or the fricatives /v/ /z/, and then was analogically extended to words where a vowel intervened.7 195-196 324 130 32 In any case, it was undoubtedly supported by the fortition of /nɣ/ to /nɡ/ seen in e.g. enm syngen to sin; variants of that word such as enm synwe are either from varieties where this fortition failed or from a late ang *synegian.
On the other hand, Brunner doubts that such fortition occured, claiming that the relevant forms are simply instances of the Early Middle English use of ⟨g⟩ to represent /ɣ/.38 44 As pointed out by Flasdieck, this assertion is groundless1951 Flasdieck Hermann Studien zur Laut- und Wortgeschichte Anglia 70 w:de:Max Niemeyer Verlag w:Tübingen 10.1515/angl.1951.1951.70.225 0340-5222 4824871216 227 since the texts where it is attested do not use ⟨g⟩ in such a manner.
