Norwegian Bokmål
no Lærdal
Etymology 1
nb gmq-mno Lærdall, attested in 1427, from nb non Læradalr, probably reduced from reconstructed non *Lærardalr. The latter consists of the genitive *Lærar of a lost river name non *Lærr and non dalr valley, dale, literally “valley of the Lærr”. 1323 in the dative forms Læradali and Lærdali.
The river name is of uncertain origin. Magnus Olsen connected it with the element in the Norwegian place name nb Lesja and Old English ang læs pasture, interpreting *Lærr as approximately “the river flowing through grass-rich land”. An earlier proposal connecting the name with Old Norse non lær thigh and a root meaning “to be curved” was regarded by Rygh as unlikely.
Old Norse non dalr valley, dale is from nb gem-pro *dalą valley, dale; its deeper origin is uncertain.

Usage notes
Historically, nb Lærdal is a district name rather than an original farm name. The valley itself is normally called nb Lærdalen in modern usage.
Rygh also recorded a pronunciation with /eː/ in the first syllable, corresponding to historical forms in Ler- alongside Lær-.
The formerly frequent spelling Leirdal is etymologically misleading; the name is unrelated to nb leire clay.
