From late lb gmh *mālzīt, gmh mālzeit, from gmh māl meal + gmh zīt time. The Luxembourgish form through a reduced gmh *mālzet with -ch- probably by hypercorrection (as in lb Aarbecht, lb Wourecht). Compare de Mahlzeit, nl maaltijd.
