stoff
German
Etymology
de goh gmw-pro
First attested in the mid 17th century. Most likely borrowed from Early Modern de nl stof, from de dum stoffe, borrowed from de fro estophe, fro estoffe, from fro estoffer to provide what is necessary, equip, stuff. The word is ultimately Germanic and was borrowed into Old French from de goh stoffōn, itself from de gmw-pro *stoppōn, making it a doublet of de stopfen to stuff, to plug.
