nb ine-pro *néh₂s *bʰuH-
From nb Nes byen headland; place name the town, literally “the town at Nes”. The second element nb byen the town is the definite singular of nb by town, city, inherited from nb da by, from nb non býr place to settle; settlement, derived from non búa to dwell, live.
The municipality was called nb Nes until 2020, when its name was changed to nb Nesbyen to avoid confusion with nb Nes in Akershus.
