Dutch
Etymology
First attested as Smilde in 1846. Difficult to interpret due to a paucity of old attestations. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from a term cognate to nl smal narrow, a derivation from osx *smeltitha soft swampland and a derivation from nl smele hair grass, Deschampsia sp.. Compare nl Smele.
