Etymology
Potentially attested as in uilla martfelde in 765-779, attested with certainty as maruilde in 815-816. Potentially a compound of nl odt *marthu marten, Martes sp. and nl veld field. The first element was later reinterpreted as nl meer lake, pool, and the dative plural form of nl hoeve piece of land of a certain size was added by analogy with nl Veldhoven.
