Etymology
(Zuid-Holland) First attested as strinen in 1167. Derived from a hydronym, derived in turn from nl ine-pro *stri strike, hit or ine-pro *sreu flow. An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from (a term cognate to) nl struinen wander about, amble about.
(Noord-Brabant) First attested as 't huys te striene in 1323. Named after a former castle, which in turn was named after a former hydronym.
