Etymology
Originally fi *Kokema, as the name of the river (fi Kokemäenjoki); fi mäki hill has later been introduced folk-etymologically through the inflected forms. Ultimately possibly from fi kokea to check a fishing net (fi kokema with fi -ma nominal, thus meaning fishing place, fishing grounds). First attested in 1845; the Swedish name is attested since 1322 (as gmq-osw Kumu, modern sv Kumo).
Heikkilä (2014) alternatively proposes that the modern form fi Kokemäki developed from fi *Kokemamäki, in fact containing fi mäki hill (perhaps in reference to a nearby village fi Mäkikylä hill-village) attached to the original stem fi Kokema. In addition, the Swedish name sv Kumo is likely unrelated, deriving from an older Finnish word fi *kuumo beacon fire, signal fire (from fi kuuma hot). It is also possible that the name fi Kokema is only from about 1000 AD, and the river may have originally been called fi Vanaja (see fi Vanajavesi) before post-glacial rebound changed the landscape.Mikko K.
