Dutch
Etymology
First attested as husidina in 918-948. The toponym has been interpreted as nl gem-pro *husid-inja- place of refuge, secure location, in turn derived from nl ine-pro *(s)kewH- to hide, to occlude and related to got 𐌷𐌿𐌶𐌳 treasure, hoard, ang hord hoard, treasure and osx hord hidden courtyard, treasure. Alternative interpretations include cel-pro *Kusidiniom settlement of Kusidinios and gem-pro *hus-idh-umnjô- place of houses. The toponym was later reinterpreted to a compound of nl huis house and the plural form of nl duin dune.
Compare nl Heusden, nl Huizinge and nl Opheusden.
