Dutch
Etymology
First attested as bolgaerd in 1440. Potentially derived from a compound of nl ofs *Bullinga a surname and ofs werd terp, artificial mound used for habitation. A reading of the first element as nl bol rounded elevated place is less likely. Compare nl Wijtgaard.
