Albanian
sq:Prishtina
Etymology
sq. Multiple theories exist:
possibly from sq la pristinus prīstinus former; original; pristine.
alternatively from dialectal sq sla-pro *pryščina spring of water, from sla-pro *pryskati to splash, to spray; a corroborating reflex is attested in the Moravian dialects of Czech.Loma Aleksandar Aleksandar Loma 2013 Топонимија Бањске хрисовуље Onomatološki Prilozi Toponymy of the Banjska Chrysobull Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts Belgrade 0351-9171 181
alternatively from sla-pro *Prišьčь of Prishek (compare kjv Prišek and zlw-opl Parzyszek, both surnames) + derivational suffix sla-pro *-ina.Snoj Marko Marko Snoj 2008 Origjina e emrit të vendit Prishtinë Studime filologjike shqiptare : konferencë shkencore, 21-22 nëntor 2007 Origin of the place name Pristina Akademia e Shkencave dhe e Arteve e Kosovës, Akademia e Shkencave e Shqipërisë Pristina 9789951413688 277-81 However, this etymology has been criticised on the basis of presupposing a rare and relatively late word formation process.

However, the name normally appears as Iūstīniānus Prīmus, with the adjective following instead of preceding.
Hamp proposes a Proto-Albanian compound between derivatives of sq ine-pro *pértus *pr̥tu- crossing (> "ford" in some descendants) and ine-pro *steyh₂- *stoyh₂-n- stone (whence en stone, ru стена wall) which, with the language spoken in the region before the reign of Roman emperor Trajan (1st-2nd century CE), would have produced Prishtina.Mehmeti Col This Time In Linguistics History: Eric Hamp and Albanian Linguistics https://www.linguisticsociety.org/content/time-linguistics-history-eric-hamp-and-albanian-linguistics Linguistic Society of America https://web.archive.org/web/20231004124717/https://www.linguisticsociety.org/content/time-linguistics-history-eric-hamp-and-albanian-linguistics 4 October 2023 Thus the name in the pre-Slavic migrations era would have meant "ford-stone" (compare en Stanford).Curtis Matthew Slavic-Albanian Language Contact, Convergence, and Coexistence 42 2012 Ohio State University 978-1-2675-8033-7 https://eric.ed.gov/?id=ED546136 However, owing to neither supposed derivative surviving in modern Albanian, this theory is speculative.
