Etymology
nb, ultimately from nb fro Alberon, based on nb gmh Alberich elf king, fairy king. The Germanic name contains gmh alp elf, fairy and a second element ultimately from gem-pro *rīks king, ruler. The name also appears in Old French as fro Auberon and passed into English as en Oberon.
The legendary figure is first depicted in the medieval French poem Huon of Bordeaux and later appears prominently as the king of the fairies and husband of Titania in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
The moon of Uranus was discovered by William Herschel in 1787 and was named after the literary Oberon. The town of Oberon in New South Wales, formerly known as Bullock Flat, was renamed in 1863 after Shakespeare's king of the fairies. Oberon in North Dakota was likewise given its present name in 1886 in reference to A Midsummer Night's Dream.
The computing name derives from the moon. Niklaus Wirth chose Oberon as the name of his project at ETH Zurich after Voyager 2's encounter with Uranus and its moons in 1986; the programming language was subsequently given the same name as the system.
Parallel international forms include da Oberon, sv Oberon, de Oberon, fr Obéron, es Oberón, fi Oberon and en Oberon.
