Luxembourgish Etymology Perhaps from lb li Luuk or an older pronunciation of lb nl Luik. Compare dated gmw-cfr Lück, gmw-cfr Lick. Old inheritance should have yielded lb *Liddech or lb *Leidech as in de Lüttich. It is clear that many Dutch-speakers travelled to and resided at Liège, and plausible that the more eastern and southern areas may have adopted the name of the city from these fellow Germanic-speakers rather than the Romance population.
