Dutch
Etymology
First attested as in uilla schinneuelt in 1180. Likely a compound of dialectal nl schijn land cleared for agriculture and nl veld field. A reading of the first element as the hydronym Schin (related to odt skīnan shine, sparkle) is less likely. Compare nl Schimmert, nl Schinnen and nl Schin op Geul.
