ro. Dragoș Moldovanu derives it from the Polish personal name pl Kobolt, itself from ro de Kobold. N. Raevski proposes an Iranic origin, comparing the toponym os Къумбултæ from North Ossetia, although this etymology is rejected by Moldovanu.
