Etymology
la suffix :af ine-pro:*-tus<alt:*-tew-><unc> ine-pro:*-rós<alt:*-r-eh₂><unc>
Somewhat la 1, but appears to be from la ine-pro *-tus *-tew- + ine-pro *-rós *-r-eh₂. The relationship to the future active participle ending la -tūrus, also of uncertain origin, is disputed: Miller 2006 considers the ending of the participle to descend from a lost infinitive itc-pro *esom,118–119 3.9 -tūra/-sūra (> E -ture/-sure) whereas Fortson 2007 rejects that hypothesis and derives the participle ending from ine-pro *-rós.Fortson Benjamin W. IV. 2007 The origin of the Latin future active participle Verba Docenti: Studies in Historical and Indo-European Linguistics Presented to Jay H. Usage notes
A few abstract nouns in la -tūra appear to be have been formed analogically based on agent nouns in la -tōr, rather than being built directly on a verb: e.g. la cēnsūra, la gladiātūra,118–119 3.9 -tūra/-sūra (> E -ture/-sure) la praetūra from la cēnsor, la gladiātor, la praetor.
Certain terms ending in la -tūra were displaced by alternative formations in la -tiō as the latter suffix became increasingly productive; e.g. early Latin la compositūra vs. later la compositiō.
