Etymology
From de gmh ātem, from de goh ātum, from de gmw-pro *āþm *ādm, gmw-pro *āþm, from de gem-pro *ēþmaz, from de ine-pro *h₁eh₁tmén-. Cognate with nl adem and ang ǣþm. de Odem.
Final unstressed gmh -em (except in the adjectival dative ending) regularly becomes gmh -en in Late gmh -; compare de Boden, de Faden. The corresponding form gmh āten is attested, but did not establish itself because of the influence of the verb de atmen.
