Dutch
Etymology
First attested as apud staveren in 1290. Likely derived from the plural of a term cognate to osx stavor pole, stick and ang stæfer pole, rod. A derivation from a compound composed of nl stave wand, wooden pole and odt heri sandy ridge is less likely. Compare nl Stavoren and de Stavern.
