Etymology
nb la Palaestīna Palestine, from nb grc Παλαιστίνη Palaistínē Philistia and the surrounding region. The Greek name probably reflects a Semitic ethnonym or place name connected with Biblical Hebrew hbo פְּלֶשֶׁת Pəlešet Philistia, land of the Philistines, possibly transmitted through Aramaic. The precise route into Greek is uncertain.

nb historical the territory administered by the United Kingdom under the League of Nations mandate for Palestine from 1923 to 1948
Usage notes
The modern state, the historical-geographical region and the former British mandate territory are distinct senses of nb Palestina.
The historical regional sense does not imply that the area formed a single continuous sovereign state. Its boundaries, population and political administration varied considerably between historical periods.
The name predates Roman rule: Ancient Greek grc Παλαιστίνη Palaistínē is attested in the fifth century BCE. After the Bar Kokhba revolt, the Romans reused the older name in the provincial designation la Syria Palaestina, replacing the former name la Iudaea.
