Etymology
From vi yue 硭街 town of vi mườngs (SV: vi Mang Nhai).
During the vi Nguyễn Dynasty, this area was the vi Vạn Ninh (vi 萬寧) vi tổng Canton, the vi Bát Tràng (vi 鉢塲) Canton and a part of the vi Hà Môn (vi 河門) Canton.
The name Móng Cái began to appear in 1947 during the period of French Indochina.
