Etymology
Ultimately from nb grc Κύπρος. The precise route into Norwegian is uncertain. The deeper origin of the Greek name is likewise uncertain; it has traditionally been associated with the island's ancient copper production, while another interpretation connects it with the cypress tree.
The island name appears in Latin aes Cyprium (“Cypriot copper”), later la cuprum copper, ultimately the source of Norwegian Bokmål nb kobber copper.
