Etymology
From lb gmh swāger, from lb goh swāgur, from lb gem-pro *swēgraz. Cognate with hrx Schwoher, de Schwager, nl zwager. The word originally behaved like lb boer, Hoer, Joer, kloer, moer, thus being optionally monosyllabic in the basic form and usually contracted before vocalic suffixes; but it is now treated by analogy with masculine agent nouns in lb -er.
