From en bn বান্দরবান, from earlier bn বান্দরবাঁধ dam of monkeys, a compound of bn বান্দর monkey + bn বাঁধ dam, such named due to a legend that monkeys were once seen walking in a row during a heavy rainfall and that this row was compared to a dam by the locals.
