Etymology
17th century, from de gml klipschôle (16th c.), probably from gml klippe clog, wooden shoe + gml schôle school. de klipp click, clap interjection Schule. The original meaning may have been simply “village school, working-class school” (where the children wore clogs), but already the earliest attestation has the modern, restricted sense.
