From the earlier hu né variant of hu nő woman or of its possessive form hu neje wife of.
Suffix
hu suffix
hu Mrs Mrs, wife of suffix indicating marriage
hu Kovácsné Mrs. Kovács
hu király king királyné queen consort
Usage notes
Final hu -a changes to hu -á-:
hu Kovács Béla Kovács Béláné Mrs. Béla Kovács
hu Varga Vargáné Mrs. Varga
Final hu -e changes to hu -é-:
hu Kovács Endre Kovács Endréné Mrs. Endre Kovács
hu Fekete Feketéné Mrs. Fekete
If the name ends in double hu -n, it requires a hyphen:
hu Mann Mann-né Mrs. Mann93
Having a neutral vowel, it usually does not affect the vowel harmony of the word when suffixed, normally retaining back-vowel conjugation after back-vowel words, e.g. hu Jánosnéval, hu Szabónéval (see also the declension in the entries of the derived common nouns, linked below). Changing to front-vowel suffixes only because of hu -né is not common.
