Norwegian Bokmål
Etymology 1
nb da -et neuter definite singular ending, from nb non -it neuter definite singular ending, the neuter form of the suffixed definite article. The modern pronunciation was influenced by native Norwegian developments in which the final consonant became silent.
Compare nn -et, da -et and sv -et neuter definite singular ending.
Pronunciation
nb /ə/
nb /ət/ before the genitive particle nb -s
Suffix
nb suffix
An inflectional suffix forming the definite singular of neuter nouns, corresponding to English “the”.
nb hus house → nb huset the house
nb eple apple → nb eplet the apple
nb tre tree → nb treet the tree
Usage notes
The final ⟨t⟩ is normally silent: nb huset the house is pronounced /ˈhʉː.sə/.
Before the genitive particle nb -s, the ⟨t⟩ is pronounced: nb husets the house's /ˈhʉː.səts/.
When the noun ends in an unstressed ⟨e⟩, that vowel is removed before the suffix: nb eple → nb eplet, nb hode head → nb hodet the head.
Because the suffix is pronounced /ə/, an indefinite noun ending in unstressed -e may be homophonous with its definite form: nb hode and nb hodet are both commonly pronounced /ˈhuː.də/.
After a noun ending in a stressed vowel, the full written ending is retained: nb tre → nb treet, nb fly aircraft → nb flyet the aircraft.
When a definite neuter noun is preceded by a demonstrative or an attributive adjective, Bokmål normally uses so-called double definiteness: det huset, det store huset, dette eplet.
This suffix is historically related to the independent definite article and pronoun nb det the; it, that.
Etymology 2
nb da -et past-participle ending. The use of the ending in the simple past of weak verbs developed under the influence of native Norwegian dialects, in which the past-tense and participial forms had become identical.
Pronunciation
nb /ət/
Suffix
nb suffix
An inflectional suffix forming the simple past of many class-1 weak verbs, often as an alternative to nb -a.
nb kaste to throw → nb kastet threw
nb hoppe to jump → nb hoppet jumped
nb åpne to open → nb åpnet opened
An inflectional suffix forming the supine of the same weak verbs, used with an auxiliary to form the perfect tenses.
nb Hun har kastet ballen. She has thrown the ball.
nb De hadde åpnet døra. They had opened the door.
An inflectional suffix forming the basic past-participle form of the same weak verbs.
nb et kastet tau a thrown rope
nb Døra ble åpnet. The door was opened.
Forming the supine of many strong verbs, usually together with a change in the verbal stem.
nb skrive to write → nb skrevet written
nb finne to find → nb funnet found
nb drikke to drink → nb drukket drunk
Forming the indefinite neuter singular, and often an alternative masculine and feminine singular, of the past participles of many strong verbs.
nb et skrevet brev a written letter
nb en skrevet tekst a written text
nb et funnet barn a found child
Usage notes
The final ⟨t⟩ is pronounced. Thus nb kastet threw; thrown ends in /ət/, unlike the definite noun ending in Etymology 1.
With weak verbs ending in unstressed -e, that vowel is removed before nb -et: nb kaste → nb kastet, nb hoppe → nb hoppet.
Many class-1 weak verbs permit parallel forms in nb -a: nb kastet or nb kasta, nb hoppet or nb hoppa. The permitted forms must be checked for the individual verb.
The simple past, supine and basic past participle of such weak verbs are identical in writing: hun kastet, hun har kastet, ballen ble kastet.
When used adjectivally, weak past participles may have definite singular and plural forms in -ede or -ete: nb kastet → nb kastede or nb kastete.
With strong verbs, the ending does not form the simple past: nb skrive has simple past nb skrev or nb skreiv, but supine nb skrevet.
Strong past participles may have separate masculine or feminine and definite or plural forms: nb skreven or nb skrevet, neuter nb skrevet, definite and plural nb skrevne. The exact paradigm varies by verb.
The supine and the past participle may have the same form, but differ syntactically: hun har skrevet brevet contains a supine, while et skrevet brev contains a past participle.
Etymology 3
nb non -óttr provided with, associated with, an adjective-forming suffix.
Compare nn -ete and da -et adjective-forming suffix.
Pronunciation
nb /ət/
Suffix
nb suffix
Forming adjectives from nouns, denoting being full of, provided with, resembling, or characterized by what the base word denotes; a variant of nb -ete.
nb bein -et bone characterized by, full of → nb beinet bony
nb prikk -et dot, spot characterized by, full of → nb prikket dotted, spotted
nb tull -et nonsense, foolishness characterized by → nb tullet silly, foolish
Usage notes
Bokmålsordboka treats nb -et and nb -ete as variants of the same adjective-forming suffix.
In the paradigm using nb -et, the indefinite singular has the same form in all three genders, while the definite singular and plural normally end in -ete:
en beinet fisk
ei beinet hånd
et beinet ansikt
den beinete fisken
beinete fisker
The longer form in nb -ete may also be used in the indefinite singular: en beinete fisk, et beinete ansikt.
The spelling and meaning of individual formations may be lexicalized and should be checked in a dictionary.
Not every adjective ending in ⟨et⟩ contains this derivational suffix. Forms such as nb elsket loved and nb skrevet written are past participles, while forms such as nb åpent open; neuter singular contain the ordinary neuter adjective ending nb -t.
Some forms permit more than one analysis. nb prikket, for example, may function as an adjective formed from nb prikk dot, spot or as the past participle of nb prikke to dot, prick.

Norwegian Nynorsk
Etymology 1
Inherited from nn gmq-mno -et, from nn non -it.
This suffix is unique in that it preserves the silent -t in spelling, which in many other suffixes were removed in subsequent spelling reforms. This is in part because as nn -e it would be difficult to distinguish from other endings in writing, and in part because it displays the kinship with sv -et and da -et.https://www.nb.no/items/49fe7bf4c785ec9534041651b7346c75?page=169&searchText=-et
Like /k/, /t/ underwent lenition word finally in unstressed syllables during the Middle Norwegian period. The suffix was most likely pronounced as /əð/ around this time and thus evolved parallelly to fo -ið and is -ið. https://www.nb.no/items/a2f2f7345220b0bcfc5450b621a112e4?page=225

Suffix
sv suffix
Suffix forming the definite singular forms of neuter nouns, especially if they end with a consonant or stressed vowel.
Suffix forming the neuter forms of past participles of verbs belonging to the fourth declension (strong verbs). This may be analyzed as two morphemes: a combination of the suffix -en for past participle and -t for neuter, where the n of the first suffix disappears. Such an analysis is historically correct.
