oedd ödd
Welsh
Etymology
According to Pedersen and Jackson, from both cy cel-pro *-eyes (the nominative plural of masculine and feminine i-stems, from cy ine-pro *-eyes) and cy cel-pro *-esa (the nominative/accusative plural of neuter s-stems, from cy ine-pro *-esh₂); for the development in the latter case compare cy oedd was from cel-pro *esāt (la erat).2 94 95Kenneth H. Jackson, Language and History in Early Britain, Edinburgh University Press, pp. 349–50.
According to Morris Jones, from both cel-pro *-iyes (the same ending as Pedersen’s cel-pro *-eyes) and cel-pro *-iyoi (the nominative plural of masculine yo-stems) when the stress fell on the antepenult.203–5
According to Schrijver, from a cel-pro *-es-ī that arose when certain neuter s-stems became masculine; Schrijver holds cy -ydd as the sole descendant of cel-pro *-eyes.393–99
