Etymology
From nb Bosnia Hercegovina Bosnia Herzegovina, with the hyphen joining two coordinate elements and functioning like nb og and, literally “Bosnia and Herzegovina”.
The first element, nb Bosnia, is an international form ultimately based on nb sh Bȍsna, the name of the river after which the historical region was named. The deeper origin of the river name is uncertain. The pronunciation with [ɔ] instead of expected [ʊ] is rather learned.
The second element, nb Hercegovina, derives from nb sh Hèrcegovina, from sh hèrceg -ov -ina duke possessive suffix suffix used in place names, literally “duke's land”. The region was named for the territory of Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, who adopted the title hèrceg in 1448. The title derives from nb hu herceg duke, ultimately from nb gmh herzog duke.
Compare da Bosnien-Hercegovina, fo Bosnia-Hersegovina, is Bosnía og Hersegóvína, sv Bosnien och Hercegovina, de Bosnien und Herzegowina and sh Bȍsna i Hèrcegovina.
