Etymology
Recorded as Aigrun in the Domesday Book, the actual origin of this placename is still uncertain. Perhaps it is a compound of en ang ēa river and the dative plural form of ang gāra gore, strip of land or, alternatively, a fossilised survival of en ang *ēagor water, sea, whence en eagre.
