Alternative forms
ru -айший after soft consonants
Etymology
A combination of a euphonic Proto-Slavic yat (ru ѣ, inherited from sla-pro *ě) and ru -ший (itself from ru sla-pro *-jьjь comparative suffix). This suffix is used with adjectives that used to have a rising tone in the root syllable in Proto-Slavic, whereas the simpler form ru -ший was used with adjectives that used to have a falling tone in the root syllable in Proto-Slavic; as tone has been lost in Russian, such a rule has become muddier.
Suffix
ru suffix
ru comparative ru added to certain adjectives and adverbs More; used to form the comparative.
ru хра́брый храбре́йший
ru ва́жный важне́йший
ru краси́вый красиве́йший
ru бе́дный бедне́йший
Usage notes
more; used to form the comparative and superlative Comparative adjectives in Russian may both use a suffix or just prefix the word with ru более more. The suffix comparative is preferred, in the short neuter form (technically being an adverb) in predicative usage (Иван есть моложе Петра, meaning Ivan is younger than Pyotr), while the form with ru более is preferred elsewhere (Она сказала о более молодом Иване, meaning She talked about the younger Ivan). Sometimes the perfective suffix ru по- may also be used in conjunction, yielding to both ru храбе́йший and ru похрабе́йший.
For the superlative usage, instead of ru более, the periphrastic form uses either ru наиболее or ru самый, while the affixed form uses the prefix ru наи- superlative prefix (ru наиважне́йший most important (superlative) compared to ru важне́йший more important (comparative).
Declension
Short forms technically only exist as adverbial constructions in -е (as in короче, моложе, далее, более) or in -ше (as in лепше, больше, дальше).
