Etymology
A Slavic family name of patronymic origin. Its root word, the sla-pro *kovačь blacksmith trade name, is widespread in all Slavic languages. Through an occupational name, it became a paternal family name with the suffix -ics indicating descent. Originally, the suffix was common in South Slavic and East Slavic languages, but it also displaced the -ic form in Slovak, so none of the surrounding Slavic languages can be excluded from its use.
It is more common in the northwestern part of Transdanubia, from which a Wendish (Slovenian) origin can be inferred.
