Etymology
From nb republikken the republic, the definite singular of nb republikk republic, + nb Makedonia Macedonia, literally “the Republic of Macedonia”; corresponding to Macedonian mk Република Македонија Republic of Macedonia.
The first element is the inflected form of nb republikk, itself borrowed from nb fr république republic, from nb la rēs pūblica public affair; state, from la rēs thing, matter and la pūblica public. The second element ultimately continues Ancient Greek grc Μᾰκεδονῐ́ᾱ Macedonia, traditionally associated with grc μᾰκεδνός high, tall.
Parallel formations include nn Republikken Makedonia, de Republik Mazedonien, it Repubblica di Macedonia, es República de Macedonia and mk Република Македонија Republic of Macedonia.

Usage notes
This was the country's constitutional official name from its independence in 1991 until 12 February 2019, when it was replaced by Republikken Nord-Makedonia (“the Republic of North Macedonia”).
Because of the naming dispute with Greece, the country was admitted to the United Nations and commonly referred to internationally under the provisional designation Den tidligere jugoslaviske republikken Makedonia (“the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia”), often abbreviated FYROM.
