Alternative forms

Etymology
16th century, of uncertain origin. Cognate with de gml hump heap, lump, nl homp chunk, gobbet, en hump, all possibly from a de gmw-pro *hump. Within High German it was originally restricted to the colonial dialects (i.e. East Central German), which might suggest a borrowing from the gml - form (though the -mp- is regular). As none of the Germanic words is attested before 1550, any further derivation must remain tentative; but one compares grc κύμβη, mga comm.
