Francesco de Martino (31 May 1907 – 18 November 2002) was an Italian jurist, politician, lifetime senator (1991–2002) and former Vice President of the Council of Ministers. He was considered by many to be the conscience of the Italian Socialist Party.
Quotes
[On the differences between the Italian and French left] In Italy the left is more diverse and the relationships within it, therefore, more complicated.
[On the scenarios possible after the elections of the VII legislature of the Italian Republic] The only solution is the creation of a more left-wing government, including all democratic parties, including the communist one. But it is out of the question to plan a government led by a communist personality.

From an interview by Furio Colomboi, De Martino, speranze socialiste, La Stampa, 4 June 1976.
We ask for votes to enlarge the party, but we cannot go around promising places on the list.
Since the phenomenon of Catholic dissent was born, their natural place has been in the PSI.
[On the government of the socialist Mário Soares in Portugal with the technical presence of the Communist Party] The policies of the Portuguese Communists should be rejected immediately and harshly.
The DC's overpowering power comes from the persuasion that nothing would ever change. This persuasion has upended a party that has its respectable roots and many worthy people, turning it into a den of Gava and such men.
[On the longevity of political parties] Nothing is eternal, nothing is sacred, all borders are mobile and all combinations must be possible. Voters will understand this.
We don't wave flags because it's not our style, especially in issues of individual choice and conscience.
We have always been open, is the definition of the party: a political space without walls and without orthodoxies.
We socialists have no orthodoxy behind us, no feigned faith in whose name we can justify the means, no international ties or hindrances, no internal or external church from which to distance ourselves.
From an interview by Fulvio Milone about the dossier Mitrokhin, «Ma questo sembra un film», La Stampa, 12 October 1999
I'm amazed because at the age of 92, I never imagined I'd be involved in such a business; saddened because I don't think it's right for documents to be made public without investigation.
It is perhaps superfluous to say that I have nothing to do with this story. I've only heard of espionage in books and movies.
I have always been a left-wing socialist, so for the director of this very crude, as well as dirty, operation, it was credible that De Martino might have had unclear contacts with the Soviets.
Do you want me to have never had anything to do with the Soviets, as well as the Americans, who were actually more active, in over fifty years of political activity, during which I also held government positions?
Segreti militari? Non scherziamo...
None of us was naive enough to rule out the possibility that an embassy official or member of any delegation was actually a spy. But, again, we were just talking about politics. Even later, when I held government positions, relations were always exclusively political, as well as extremely formal. If sometimes the conversation took a different, more delicate turn, I immediately cut off all contact. On the other hand, what could the KGB have achieved from Francesco De Martino? Military secrets? Let's not joke...
It turns out that this is the operation of a dishonest imbecile who wanted to make money by selling the documents to the highest bidder, and that someone else caught the ball to create tension.
