Sheba Chhachhi (born 1958) is an Indian photographer, women's rights activist and installation artist based in New Delhi. Documented women's movement in India since 1980s. Quotes I have always been drawn to ‘odd’ women. I feel an affinity, a resonance with women who don't fit the norm – perhaps recognising aspects of myself – and this is reflected in my photographic work. My work is really about opening up a conversation, in the process of creating as well as sharing, to invite people to think about personal, social and public concerns, primarily around feminism and ecology. They are not wives, they are not mothers, they are not daughters. They reinvent themselves as individual beings. The self-definition is in relation to the metaphysical, and not the social. On Ganga's Daughters (women sadhus), 1992-2004 Some women have the luxury of taking that position today because feminism fought all these battles for them. But the battle against patriarchy continues. I offer a feminist perspective, by which I mean the perspective of feminism as a political philosophy which analyses power structures within society, family and self, not merely the perspective of women's rights. Eco-feminism articulates the deep structural connection between the domination of and extraction from the earth and the subjugation of women. In many parts of the world today, we see what is called spectatorship democracy at work. Political leaders deploy spectacle to influence and shape the life of the citizen, where the citizen is a powerless watcher. External links
