Sepultura is a Brazilian heavy metal band formed in Belo Horizonte in 1984 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. They were a major force in the groove metal, thrash metal, and death metal genres during the late 1980s and early 1990s, with their later experiments drawing influence from alternative metal, world music, nu metal, hardcore punk and industrial metal. Sepultura is also considered part of the second wave of thrash metal acts from the late 1980s to early-to-mid-1990s.
Quotes about Sepultura
Heavily influenced by earlier thrash bands as well, particularly Slayer, Sepultura have constantly straddled the line between straightforward thrash and helping innovate the modern incarnation of death metal. Their Brazilian origin is also apparent in their occasional use of Latin and samba beats, as well as the musical traditions of Brazil's indigenous people such as the Xavante tribe from Brazil's state of Mato Grosso, who actually participated in the recording of 1996's album Roots.
Zahra Huselid of Screen Rant (Jan 13, 2025)
Sepultura helped put South America on the heavy metal radar as thrash was still in its infancy. The band’s first two records toe the line between thrash and black metal, but they came into their own on the genre-defining ‘Beneath the Remains.’
