Mary Agnes Stainbank (1899-1996) was a pioneering South African sculptor. She was credited with introducing a modern school of sculpture to South Africa. Most of her work was neglected during her lifetime, but she was rediscovered by the sculptor Andries Botha in the early 1980s, who went on to organize a national tour of her work.
The Stainbank collection is widely considered the most extensive intact body of work by any single artist in South Africa. The collection is housed in the Mary Stainbank Memorial Gallery at Coedmore, the Stainbank family’s original estate, where they settled in the 1880s.
