Violet Oakley (June 10, 1874 – February 25, 1961) was an American artist. She was the first American woman to receive a public wikt:mural mural commission. During the first quarter of the 20th century, she was renowned as a pathbreaker in mural decoration, a field that had been exclusively practiced by men. Oakley excelled at murals and stained glass designs that addressed themes from history and literature in Renaissance-revival styles.
Quotes about Oakley
During World War II, Violet Oakley crafted twenty-four portable wikt:triptych triptychs intended for American battleships, military bases, and airfields. While they seem conventional at first glance, a closer inspection uncovers distinct Christian Science elements, such as the spirit’s victory over matter, which promises triumph and tranquility. With Oakley, art created by Christian Scientists matured. She demonstrated that illustrating Christian Science books is not essential to conveying the principles and spirit of the religion within the evolving realm of modern art.
