I Learnt How To DJ Using My First Smartphone.
My father used to play music a lot when I was younger specifically jazz that’s where my love for music began. I then started to familiarise myself with different genres and that’s when I realised that music somehow sets my soul on fire.
I was in high school when I got my first smartphone, I learnt how to DJ using it that phone. I would select a song and create a playlist from there… little did I know it’ll grow into the love of music such as being a full-time DJ.
I used to listen to the soothing jams of R&B singer Tamia and Swiss harpist Andreas Vollenweider… they helped shape the way I perceive and listen to music. I admired how detailed their music was along with the arrangement of their songs, which highly influenced how I produce my music now.
I knew I was destined to be big, however, I believe my hard work has finally paid off with my new project that I dropped last week Friday. I am completely overwhelmed by the love and support I’ve received from Amukelani.

It’s amazing. It’s the greatest feeling ever, like it really means a lot to me. I feel like it defines the road I’ve been traveling, from Momo’s Private School, from House Afrika, everywhere. I feel like I had to do this. It’s like revealing a secret that you’ve had on your chest – finally I got to release everything that I had. This is who I am.
You can tell everyone, because you can chill at the salon and listen to this album and you wouldn’t feel like “I’ve been sitting here, doing my hair for a really long time.” You see? So you can drive from [Johannesburg] to maybe, Nelspruit; you can drive listening to this album there and back and you won’t even notice the distance you’ve gone.
You feel like you’re floating, you’re not even driving because of the sound that I bring, so it caters for everyone. Even like the small children… There’s a child I posted on Instagram, [who’s shouting] “Momo Momo Momo!” So me, when I saw this I was like, “God, thank you for everything that you have done for me.” I don’t even know what to say. I didn’t even expect this album to do this, so when I see how everyone’s reacting… I’ve done it. I’ve accommodated everyone.

No, it doesn’t make me feel uncomfortable because that’s me — if we were to come up with another name, it wouldn’t make sense.
My Piano is expensive.
After that, my fans were like, ‘We want more music.
He does some Jazzy House music. There’s a song he did that’s like 20 minutes long.
People wanted more, so that’s why I was like ‘okay, I’m gonna give you a surprise album.
I also listen to a lot of Hip Hop.
I don’t really sample. I would start something from scratch that’s similar to that. With sampling, I feel like I’m limiting myself.
You know when you’re in studio, and you do a song and the song becomes nicer as you add more elements like the bass guitar…I just decide there that the song is getting stretched and made longer because it shouldn’t be this short.
Sometimes we don’t need to be dancing. Sometimes, you just need to chill and calm down. I told myself I’d take the risk and switch my sound…and grateful for the change because it has brought me where I am today.
No matter how tired I get, Tuesday and Thursday are my studio sessions. People come to studio and we work, from 9pm until 9 in the morning.
It’s not a platform where they are taking chances on this and that …it’s very musical. I didn’t understand why am I the chosen one.
