thumb|Mr. Sloan, Cadillacs are made to run, not just to sell. ~ Henry M. Leland The Cadillac Motor Car Division (/ˈkædɪlæk/) is a division of the American automobile manufacturer General Motors Company (GM) that designs and builds luxury vehicles. Its major markets are the United States, Canada, and China. Cadillac models are distributed in 34 additional markets worldwide. Cadillac automobiles are at the top of the luxury field within the United States. In 2019, Cadillac sold 390,458 vehicles worldwide, a record for the brand. Founded in 1902, Cadillac is among the oldest automotive brands in the world, fourth in the United States only to Autocar Company (1897) and fellow GM marques Oldsmobile (1897) and Buick (1899), and the second-oldest American automaker still operating. It was named after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who founded Detroit, Michigan. The Cadillac crest is based on his coat of arms. thumb|Well, there she sits buddy just a-gleamin' in the sunThere to greet a working man when his day is doneI'm gonna pack my pa and I'm gonna pack my auntI'm gonna take them down to the Cadillac ranch ~ Bruce Springsteen thumb|Well, it's the finest lookin' car that ever rolled off the lineAny other car, you'd just be wastin' your timeOh, one fine day I'm gonna make a Cadillac mine. ~ Stray Cats thumb|The Only Way To Travel Is Cadillac Style ~ Cadillac advertising, 1988-1991 thumb|I might not have any money, I might not have a Cadillac, but I'm proud of what I do and I don't answer to anybody. ~ A Bronx Tale thumb|I got it one piece at a time and it didn't cost me a dimeYou'll know it's me when I come through your townI'm gonna ride around in style, I'm gonna drive everybody wild'Cause I'll have the only one there is around ~ Johnny Cash thumb|"And what are you in now?""I had a Dodge.""Those are wonderful if you want to get somewhere. Victory in a race at Grosse Point brought him sufficient kudos for a second company, the Henry Ford Motor Company, founded just seven weeks later. Many invested who had already lost money financing the Detroit Automobile Company. The intention — of he backers at least — was to start making a car based on the one which had been responsible for Ford's famous racing victory. Yet only four months later, Ford was asked to leave and offered a severance payment of $900. The company was renamed the Cadillac Automobile Company and manufactured a car according to Ford's design, but with a single, rather than a two-cylinder motor. After 1909, as part of General Motors, Ford's arch rivals in later years, Cadillac became one of America's most prestigious makes of motor car — the exact opposite of the reputation Ford motor cars later acquired.
