What happened to Katie?(taglines)
Katie Cannon
Don't worry, grandma, it's fun to be dead! [throws her out window]
Nasmaranian demon
[to Charlie, in a sobbing Katie] I'm not very comfortable inside your daughter. [crawling towards Charlie] You used to play chase with me. Now you just wriggle away like a worm. You're never getting her back! I'm her daddy now!
Charlie Cannon
She's been missing for eight years. What was our daughter doing in a three thousand year old sarcophagus?
What the fuck was our daughter doing in a three-thousand-year old sarcophagus?
[To Dalia] Zaki! The words! Remember the words!
Maud Cannon
[to teacher, and repeatedly] You're a rat-faced cunt.
Detective Dalia Zaki
[Places VHS tape on coffee table before Charlie and Larissa] I wish I didn't have to show you what's on this tape. But it's very important you see what happened to Katie. [Plays tape and The Magician appears and sits on couch seat] This is the woman who kidnapped your daughter. [The Magician speaks and Dalia translates] "The dark signs have begun to show once more. Warning us that the time has come to recommit to the containment of our ancient family secret. This will be the 82nd mummification ritual. And as the first-born child, I am honored to carry this great responsibility of ensuring that our family will remain protected from the evil reach of the Nasmaranian. I commit this testament so that in decades to come, your children will know what they must do, when it is their time to transfer this demon from a spent vessel to a freshly prepared host. [The Magician gets up and leans into camera] An innocent child is best, as the bodies lasts longest, but any live human will do. Let us begin." [Tape changes to a scene of demon possession transfer ritual, with The Magician pulling hood off of Katie whimpering she wants to go home with Katie being hung up on a rack and lowered over an Egyptian mummy with a black smoke column shooting into Katie's mouth] That thing they put inside her was meant to stay buried and bound.
Carmen Santiago
[in demonic voice] Hey Charlie. Wanna feast on me? Come on. Taste it.
The Magician
[On tape, demonstrating demonic possession ritual] An innocent child is best, as the bodies lasts longest, but any live human will do. Let us begin.
Layla Khalil
[Explaining to Detective Dalia Zaki over the semi-amputated tongue] I tried to tell the truth once, but she punished me.
Dialogue
Katie Cannon: [Charlie taps in morse code on table] Pepperoni pizza?
Charlie Cannon: Oh. You have got this all wrapped up tonight.
Seb Cannon: Can we get pizza tonight?
Charlie Cannon: Not tonight, buddy.
Katie Cannon: You don't even like pizza.
Seb Cannon: No, I don't like cheese.
Katie Cannon: Pizza's not pizza without cheese.
Charlie Cannon: She's got a point.
TV anchor: Large scale efforts are being made...
Katie Cannon: Dad, come on, another...
Charlie Cannon: Yeah, uh... okay. Let's do...
TV anchor: Our reporter on the ground is Charlie Cannon.
TV Charlie Cannon: Critics suggest that three years of almost continuous drought has forced local farmers to find new and increasingly desperate measures to make money. But government ministers...
Katie Cannon: Dad?
TV Charlie Cannon: ...are on the defensive...
Charlie Cannon: Just a minute.
TV Charlie Cannon: ...as they roll out new major schemes in water management and irrigation in desert areas.
Charlie Cannon: [Seb mimics hand gestures of Charlie on TV] What is that, Seb? What are you doing?
Seb Cannon: An impression of you?
Charlie Cannon: Oh, that's an impression of me? With the hands thing?
Seb Cannon: Yeah.
TV Charlie Cannon: Unlike the swath of looting that took place during the Arab Spring of 2011, the Egyptian authorities are unsure of what caused the uptick in authorized digs, with the smuggling...
Charlie Cannon: [Katie takes TV remote and turns off TV] Hey!
TV Charlie Cannon: ...of ancient art...
Katie Cannon: We need to practice this more, or I'll fail it.
Charlie Cannon: Okay.
Charlie Cannon: [To Larissa, applying makeup in bathroom mirror] Babe, do I use my hands too much when I'm on TV?
Larissa Cannon: Um... isn't it one of your tics?
Charlie Cannon: My tics?
Larissa Cannon: Like trademarks. Like, you know, good night and good luck, or this "is the way it is".
Charlie Cannon: Those are catchphrases. [spins both hands] I mean, do I do too much of this shit with my hands? 'Cause that could potentially be very annoying to viewers.
Larissa Cannon: You know what is really annoying? That you are doing it in my peripheral vision, so stop it.
Charlie Cannon: [playfully approaches] Oh, yeah. It's annoying.
Larissa Cannon: Yeah.
Charlie Cannon: In your peripheral vision?
Larissa Cannon: It's very annoying.
Charlie Cannon: Yeah?
Larissa Cannon: Yeah.
Charlie Cannon: What about this? Is this annoying? [playfully spins her around] Is this annoying? [she giggles]
Larissa Cannon: Stop it.
Charlie Cannon: [referring to Larissa's pregnancy] What about her? Is she gonna be annoying?
Detective Dalia Zaki: [on phone] I appreciate your frustration but I cannot dispatch officers to arrest a monkey.
Caller: I'll just throw it down my well then!
Detective Dalia Zaki: No, I would not recommend you drown the monkey.
Caller: Fine, I'll just shoot it.
Detective Ismail: [hangs up Zaki's phone] Officer Zaki, you speak good English, right? [Dalia nods]
...
Detective Ismail: [walking with Dalia] Why do you want to join the missing persons department? Lose a cat when you were eight years old?
Detective Dalia Zaki: I'm allergic to cats.
Detective Ismail: You know, Officer Zaki, I've located one hundred and ninety-three people in twenty-seven years on this job. [opens door]
Detective Dalia Zaki: That's on average seven-point-one-four people you saved per year.
Detective Ismail: [turns to her] One hundred and ninety of them were dead. If you want to be promoted in this department, you should consider if facing that many corpses is an equation you can stomach. [goes in interview room]
...
Larissa Cannon: [slides phone across table] This is her. This is just from a week ago.
Detective Ismail: [to Dalia in Arabic] Are they tourists?
Detective Dalia Zaki: [in English to Larissa and Charlie] Are you on vacation?
Larissa Cannon: No, no. We live here. We've been living her for five months. He's a TV news correspondent.
Detective Dalia Zaki: [in Arabic to Ismail] They are here for work. He's a TV reporter.
Detective Ismail: [to Dalia in Arabic] I don't know his face.
Detective Dalia Zaki: [in English to Larissa and Charlie] When was the last time you saw Katie?
Larissa Cannon: 11 am, um... then I went to work, and... [to Charlie] you were at home with the kids. And that's it.
Detective Dalia Zaki: Mr. Cannon.
Charlie Cannon: About three pm.
Detective Dalia Zaki: [in Arabic to Ismail] The father was the last to see her.
Larissa Cannon: Wait, I have these. Somebody, whoever took her, was giving these to her. [presents candy wrappers]
Detective Dalia Zaki: [in Arabic to Ismail, examining candy wrappers] She says the girl was getting these as gifts. Sounds like she was being groomed.
Detective Ismail: [to Dalia in Arabic] Or they could be lying.
Larissa Cannon: What is he saying? What is he saying?
Detective Ismail: [to Dalia in Arabic] Always start by looking in the family. They might have accidentally killed her and are trying to cover it up
Charlie Cannon: Hey. You think I don't know what you're talking about? [gestures to Larissa and himself] You think we did this?! You think we did something to our own daughter?! What the fuck is your problem?! [bangs table up and down] Are you going to fucking help us?! Send someone out there to find her! Somebody took our child!
Charlie Cannon: [Officer Zaki shows photo on table] What is this?
Detective Dalia Zaki: [Refers to photo] It's a basalt sarcophagus. Between two and three thousand years old. Katie was being transported inside it when the plane crashed.
Charlie Cannon: What the fuck was our daughter doing in a three-thousand-year old sarcophagus?
Detective Dalia Zaki: If you want to smuggle someone or even something in this country and avoid detection, the best place is our history. Blind eyes are turned to the illegal trade of artifacts. It's the perfect human trafficking cover.
Larissa Cannon: I think we should get back upstairs to her.
Charlie Cannon: I remember you. You were there the day she got kidnapped. You had a working theory then too, didn't you? You thought I did something to her.
Detective Dalia Zaki: That was my senior officer's opinion.
Larissa Cannon: Charlie, let's get back upstairs.
Charlie Cannon: And where's his expert opinion tonight?
Detective Dalia Zaki: Buried in Bab-al-Wazir Cemetery.
Charlie Cannon: Are you gonna do a better job of finding our daughter than he did?
Detective Dalia Zaki: Yes.
Detective Dalia Zaki: [To Layla Khalil in interrogation room] What the fuck is happening on that tape? [Grabs Layla by shirt and hoists her up] Fucking speak! [Layla opens mouth to reveal semi-amputated tongue and Dalia recoils in horror] Who did this to you? The woman on the tape? Your mother?
Layla Khalil: I tried to tell the truth once, so she punished me.
Detective Dalia Zaki: What is the truth?
Layla Khalil: Katie is not supposed to be outside of the box. The valley, it's going to be flooded soon. My brothers had no choice but to move it, but it was never moved before.
Detective Dalia Zaki: What is it? [Layla makes a "I need to write it down gesture]
Funeral woman 1: [observing Carmen's cadaver in open casket] She looks at least ten years younger.
Funeral woman 2: Embalming fluid. It's like Botox for the dead.
Funeral woman 1: I heard she slipped and fell when she was dusting curtains.
Funeral woman 2: I heard it might not have been an accident at all. [other woman does a Sign of the Cross on chest] That shade of lipstick really suits her though, right?
Maud Cannon: Where are we going?
Larissa Cannon: [packing suitcase] We're going somewhere safe.
Maud Cannon: Is Katie coming?
Larissa Cannon: No. Not right now.
Maud Cannon: Why are you so bad at this?
Larissa Cannon: Because, we are in a rush, Maud. Okay?
Maud Cannon: No. At being my mom. [breaks grinning at TV with a silhouette of The Magician on it]
Maud Cannon: [approaches bedroom door] Katie, is that you singing?
Katie Cannon: Yes. I can talk now too.
Maud Cannon: Holy shit! I'll go get mom.
Katie Cannon: No, Maudie. L-let's make it a surprise. I wanted to practice talking to you first. You're my favorite in the family.
Maud Cannon: But you don't even know me.
Katie Cannon: Exactly. That's why I wanna know all the different things about you.
Maud Cannon: Like what?
Katie Cannon: Like how your little piggies taste. [licks Maud's toes from under door, startling her who attempts to flee, then thwarts her and suspends her in mid-air, and is infused with a Nasmaranian enchanting spell]
Larissa Cannon: [to Katie] Come on, sweetheart. Let's go back upstairs. [Katie taps in morse code to Charlie in caged coffin] What is he saying?
Katie Cannon: He says; he loves us. [taps on coffin] We love you, Dad.
The Magician: [in Arabic] You're late today. You must have taken enough of my blood to fill a swimming pool by now. I wish they would stop playing this music. It's giving me a headache.
Larissa Cannon: [paralyzes The Magician] You know my face. You remember my Katie, don't you? She wants to know if you'd like to see a trick.
Detective Dalia Zaki: [in Arabic] I'm sure you remember what happens now. [Closes the door, begin chanting the ritual that will transfer Nasmaranian from Charlie to the Magician]
